Spinal Manipulation / Adjustment
What truly differentiates doctors of chiropractic from any other healthcare professional is the fact that chiropractors perform spinal care that relieves pain and symptoms by restoring joint mobility and range of motion. Restoring the range of motion improves both posture, function, and relieves pain.
When spinal joint dysfunction occurs, a chiropractor can restore spinal alignment and function through spinal manipulation in addition to other corrective techniques. This procedure is appropriately called an adjustment, and the adjustment enables the body to heal. The chiropractic adjustment is a quick thrust applied to a vertebra for the purpose of correcting its position, movement or both. Adjustments are often accompanied by an audible release of gas that sounds like a “pop.” On rare occasions, muscle soreness might occur, as range of motion is restored. A patient will be given a treatment plan designed specifically to correct their condition. A course of treatment may last from approximately five treatments to thirty treatments for their condition. Spinal manipulations may be used in conjunction with physical medicine or therapy, stretching/strengthening exercises, decompression therapy, or massage therapy for maximum health benefit.
